Why 'I See Color' Matters
In America, meaningful progress in addressing race is long overdue. A little before 2020, "equity" became a popular term to acknowledge that achieving equal outcomes requires different processes based on individual characteristics. However, political attacks on terms like Critical Race Theory, "woke," and diversity, equity, and inclusion quickly tried to undermine this progress.
Less aggressive but equally damanging are color-neutral statements like “I don’t see color.” Racial colorblindness overlooks racial and ethnic differences in the name of harmony. This is problematic because seeing the full spectrum of who we are, including our race and experiences, is essential.
Why See Color?
Seeing color celebrates the rich diversity of human experience. It acknowledges that race and cultural background shape who we are and how we navigate the world. By seeing color, we can dismantle unconscious bias, create inclusive environments, and advocate for true racial equity in all aspects of life.
